Encaustic Mixed Media on Wood Panel

H8” W8”

Sold

“Encaustic painting, a method of applying hot oil tinted bees wax to panels, has been around for more than 2000 years, originating in Greece and further exploration and development by the Egyptians and then Romans. Ancient methods were labor intensive and has gone in and out of vogue over the centuries.

Modern advances has allowed this wonderful medium to rise again and is used is many different genres of art. The heated wax lends well with mixed media applications such as photography, paper and digital arts. The results are many magical layers of colour and texture.

I came across this ancient technique by taking a workshop presented by the Upstart Crow and given by encaustic artist Patricia Baldwin Seggebruch in 2010 in Tsawwassen. It immediately engaged me into a new dimension of mixed media and I fell in love with it. Until recently not having a properly well ventilated studio has slowed down my journey to working with the heated oil and wax mixture, as it is quite toxic to breath in the fumes. I have acquired some new space that with good weather should allow me to re-open my exploration of this technique that gives back such interesting and unique results.”
